A few of people have asked when the next Dark Times will be.
The answer, sadly is that we're not sure at the moment. The two problems that we have are:-
1) The Youth Hostelling Assoc put its prices up by about 30%, which equates to about an additional £15 per head just for the accomodation
2) As Sandy is no longer my girlfriend, I don't think I can ask her to slave away like a dog in a kitchen for 40 hours. And as the food is a major plus (going off feedback from the last event) we need to find ourselves a new chef before we can run another event
Suggestions gratefully received.

Well I do a good chile con carne but I don't think that's especially medieval!

Catering the next D/T shouldn't be a problem if numbers are known beforehand. The last gig took a lot of effort because all of the meals were made from scratch and from fresh produce. Most of it could have been prepared beforehand apart from that succulent apple roasted pork and breakfast fry ups

My flat mate Tom will be happy to prepare meals in advance as long as he gets an idea what is wanted and ingrediants are provided. He wouldn't be going to the event so all he want in recompense would be to keep a little bit of the grub to chuck in his freezer. Obviously anything like a medievil fry up would have to be sorted by one of the crew, which i think someone could surely manage. steve

I would definatley be up for D/T.... bumped into a guy called Liam who told me some interesting recounts and it sounds bloody good! "What's that coming over the hill?....oh yeah a 7ft monster!"
I think people are willing to pay for a good event, and this one definately sounds worth it! ;D

Well, just to let you know I do have some chef skills as I had spent about 2 years in the trade and at college, so I may well be able to help with the feasts of medieval.
However I would need to know things such as number of people, when, and like the number of meals (an evening meal, and a lunch for instance) as I have not been to one before I don't know if it's a weekend thing or what not and then there are people's dietry requirements to bear in mind (the infamous medieval vegitarians; peasants!).

P.S As a new player, what is darklight? Is it a vampire set in medieval ages or something akin to D&D? I am also presuming that they are more like one off events, than regular games.

A 8-)lex, darktimes is a low fantasy weekend bash, very atmospheric, set in England in the 1300's, think english archers against the damn french, templars, ratcatchers, gravediggers, franciscans, benedictines, dominicans THE INQUISITION, etc. There's a lot of attention to detail, time in is nearly 24hrs or until the npc's drop from fatigue. I npc'd the last one along with Si (Obviously), liam, jeremy (who plays alum the assamite) and sandy, and it was great fun. The last one was in a tiny village in the welsh marches, an old old water mill, with miles of countryside round about, no street lights, so very, very dark, and lots of things going bump in the night. i think that players can play their characters for no more than 3 games (sure Si will correct me if i'm wrong), so the concentration is on the roleplaying, if you pick a skill, you've gotta be able to roleplay it. steve

Yep, and for clarity it's Darktimes, not Darklight.
Darklight is the group as a whole. Membership of which grants several benefits including covering game fees for Vampire. (which reminds me...memberships...).
Darktimes is a low fantasy, medieval horror which is a weekend event. Due to the HELL of organising one there's one, maybe 2 a year. It is a Darklight event with an extra cost.
Darklight will also soon be branching out to run it's Ethende High fantasy system which will go as one day events. This is also likely to have an extra charge, though probably discounted for Darklight members.

Thanks for the clarification, and err oops, I meant what is dark times and not darklight, well spotted. Is there anything like pages on a web site etc. and are we given characters/choose pre-created ones or do we create our own?

The Dark Times web-site is at www.darktimes.co.uk, or there is a link to it from the main Dark Light LRP web-site We've not done one for a little bit cos they do take a lot more organisation, and becuase the YHA put its prices up by about 35% last year. Characters wise, you pick your own, but within a fairly strict guidelines. (i.e. all human, all peasant / lower class etc) Likelihood is that the next one may be system free and done purely on good roleplaying

I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra due to the higher site costs. Or use Borwick Tavern -- looks reasonably medieval-ish already....
The food last time was exceptional, but it would have been a superb event even if the food had been merely "good"!

Hulloo there Mr S
Didn't expect to see you on these boards, but hope you're doing well and all
The food was fab at the last one, and sadly from what I've heard of Borwick Tavern, thier facilities probably arent up to catering for 20 people. Think we're still looking at gettin a YHA site or at least something similar.
Dark Times is kinda on a back burner at the moment (certainly til we've got Brighton Below out of the way) but its definitely something that we want to get going again. The last one was great fun (despite being in my opinion the weakest plot of the three we've done so far).
We have got two plots half written for the next one. Just a case of getting the venue sorted

Trez, I would think that you could cater well at Borwick, but realistically you'd have to expect to take some of your cooking facilities with you -- basically buy a couple of those giant cast-iron re-enactor tripod thingummies and cook with those over a campfire. ISTR Borwick does have a cooker in the flat, and in fact there's another cooker in the house kitchen that we were able to use for the first Hyborian Tales before they opened the flat up. Managed to cook for 21 people then, but admittedly it wasn't great banquet-like feasts like at the last DT. The site we had for the 2nd HT had excellent catering facilities -- a massive commercial six-ring range in a big, well-stocked kitchen. It's not as pretty as Clun though -- you can see my review of it here: forums.rule7.co.uk/Topic1120-27-1.aspxYeah, I understand you have to prioritize BB. I've been pimping it to some of my Brighton friends, but they're mostly non-LRPers these days. Steve, I'm sure Adam Scilkeby will give you some choice words next time, though whether any of them are true or not is another matter.

We're putting together plans for another one of these, and we're just trying to get an initial idea of numbers
